The early bird catches the EARworm so be sure to have a listen to Birds Rock here today!
Pete reflects: “When I was a teenager, I was obsessed with video games. I didn't notice birds, except for the occasional bright red cardinal. When I started down the path of becoming an outdoor educator I began learning the common birds and eventually could identify chickadees, robins and woodpeckers. One day when I was walking to work, I saw this odd little bird with a golden streak in the middle of it' head. 'What the heck is that?' I thought and proceeded to find the Golden Crowned Kinglet in a bird book. From that day on something switched in me and I became obsessed with birds. Though I don't know exactly what caused that twist of fate, I do know birds have become one of the great joys of my life. From realizing cardinals sound like the lasers from Star Wars to learning the basics of bird language, birds never cease to fill me with wonder. While I of course hope this collection is a real hoot for the birders, I also hope it might inspire the teenage Pete's out there to look up once in a while.”
Pete Moss (a.k.a Peter Demakos) has been connecting children with nature for over a decade. Drawing inspiration from Raffi and Fred Penner, Pete’s playful folk-pop style and sophisticated songwriting make the collection of songs on Birds Rock accessible to everyone. With lines that deem chickadees the “timbits of the sky” and through posing questions like “do loons meet for underwater tea?”, these songs inspire care and curiosity towards the natural world.
When he’s not playing music, Pete is an outdoor educator and forest school instructor at Evergreen Brick Works. In addition to outdoor education, he delivers workshops across Ontario on the importance of getting children outside. In 2019, Pete released the album Plants Rock, featuring 12 songs about common plants that can be found across North America. In 2012, Pete founded the witty indie rock band, Blimp Rock, which has toured across Europe and Canada. Pete’s work has been featured on CBC Here And Now and As It Happens, on Owl City, CityTV, and has garnered acclaim from BlogTO and NOW Magazine.
